August 26, 2023: The Hayward Memorial

On May 8, 1942, over 600 Japanese Americans were forcibly removed from the city of Hayward, CA and taken by bus to Tanforan Assembly Center in San Bruno, south of San Francisco.

1: 1940s bus parked on a street next to a park. The sidewalk is lined with piles of suitcases and bags. 2: A Japanese American woman in suit and hat stands next to baggage, on which is sitting her daughter, a 5-year-old in coat and hat, cradling a doll. 3. The same street in 2023, with empty sidewalk, parked cars, and park on the left. 4. A closeup of Ibuki Hibi's name on the Hayward Memorial. 5. A Japanese American woman studies the names on the cylindrical monument that towers above her. The same street is in the background.

(Bottom center): Among the names on the memorial is that of Ibuki Hibi, the child awaiting the bus to Tanforan with her mother and her doll.

(Far right): The monument, designed by Patricia Wakida, is a tall cylinder engraved with the names of the 600+ local residents who disappeared from Hayward on that day. Ann Tamaki Dion searches for a name. Fred Shinoda, who was among those taken away, appears in the background, with Watkins St. in the distance. (Courtesy of Ruth Sasaki)
