This week’s Topaz Stories show that even in the barren Utah desert, art flourished.
Carol Yoshimoto writes about her grandfather, Hikojiro Mabuchi, and a treasured wood carving of a “Koi” that he created in Topaz.
Ibuki Hibi Lee was a “Young Artist” in Topaz with her mother and father, George Matsusaburo and Hisako Hibi, both artists who helped Chiura Obata organize both the Tanforan and Topaz Art Schools.
This week we are excited to present our first poem, “In the Shape of a Heart.” David Izu muses on the significance of a heart-shaped brooch made from seashells found in the ancient seabed under the desert sands of Topaz.
