Kane Maida and her family were flower growers in Richmond, CA before the War. Incarcerated in Tanforan at the age of 44, Kane began to write tanka, a short form of Japanese classical poetry. Her poetry was shared with us by her grandson, Ken Tokuno.
In this week’s post, we share three Tanforan poems, in which Kane writes of a family separated in different camps–the mother and daughter in Tanforan while the father, arrested after Pearl Harbor under the Alien Enemies Act, languishes in a military detention center in Lordsburg, New Mexico.
