July 26, 2025: Installation at JAMsj

The new Topaz Stories: Children Behind Barbed Wire Exhibit was recently installed at the Japanese American Museum of San Jose and will open on August 2, 2025. It was so much fun that I thought I’d share some photos.

But first, a great big thanks to Tyler Hirabayashi, whose company, Jonathan Hirabayashi Design, printed gorgeous panels. Tyler also spent a day helping his dad, our exhibit designer (Jonathan) prep the walls and do all the groundwork so we could come in the next day and start mounting panels.

1) A cream-colored wall with vertical strips of blue tape marking off where each panel will go. 2) A Japanese American man with short hair places a wooden strip along the dividing line between panel areas on a black-covered background.

What a team! Jonathan does the hard stuff and explains the easy stuff to the rest of us.

Three Japanese American seniors install and exhibit: a woman reaches high up to cut a rectangle out of the center of black backing paper. A man applies adhesive to black backing paper as the second woman watches.
