New Story: “Marbles and Memories”

One Mormon boy in Pleasant Grove, Utah was happy when a Japanese American boy about his age moved in next door. Richard and Jonathan bonded over candy, searching for pop bottles by the side of the road, and marbles. But eventually, Jonathan’s family pulled up stakes and moved far away–to California.

Two 9-10-year-old boys, one a blonde Caucasian and the other, Japanese American, pose behing cartoon cutouts of two figures in garish plaid suits astride a bucking donkey. 2) The same two, now seniors, sit on the floor in front of a sofa, each with a pile of marbles by his side.
(L): Richard and Jonathan, 1958 at the Utah State Fair; (R): Richard and Jonathan in 2023, reuniting in Pima, AZ.

Years later, in college, Richard learned about Topaz–and he suddenly remembered his childhood friend. Was Topaz the reason his pal had suddenly appeared–and then disappeared–from his life?

Told from Jonathan’s point of view, this is a story of innocent, happy childhood memories, burnished by age and awareness into something richer, deeper. Read “Marbles and Memories.”
