“Children of Topaz: Stories and Art”

Join us at J-Sei on September 22, 2024 (10:30-11:45 am) for “Children of Topaz: Stories and Art,” a kid-friendly program (adults are welcome!), followed by J-Sei’s annual “Family Day’ activities beginning at noon.

Two Japanese American toddlers paint, each standing before an easel, paintbrush in hand, in the bright sun outside of a barrack. Below, there is a colorful collage of three artworks in crayon and paper collage.

Topaz Toddler Stories and Art: Several handmade albums of art created by Topaz preschool children were preserved by Tomi Takahashi Sasaki, the supervisor of preschools from 1943-45. Dana Shew has tracked down over two dozen of the “toddler” artists and will share some of their art and stories.
