Day of Remembrance
KQED Forum hosted by Alexis Madrigal has been airing a series of interviews to mark the Day of Remembrance. Ruth Sasaki, Topaz Stories editor, was interviewed on February 15, “Remembering Stories of the Japanese American Incarceration.” On February 16, John Tateishi spoke about his family’s experiences and the fight for reparations. On February 18, Topaz survivor and Topaz Stories contributor Yae Wada was interviewed about her experiences. Thanks to Alexis Madrigal and the Forum staff for their thoughtful and timely programming!
Topaz Stories Reception
There will be an opening reception for the Topaz Stories Exhibit on Friday, April 22, from 4-6 pm in the Utah State Capitol rotunda in Salt Lake City. The reception is free and open to the public.
A group of Topaz survivors, descendants, and Topaz Stories contributors will be traveling from California to attend.
There will be a program of speakers, readings of three stories, and possibly some music! An hour or less, we’ve been promised, beginning at 4 pm. That leaves time to mingle and meet the contributors after the program. Those wishing to spend time viewing the exhibit are advised to do so earlier in the day, as the Capitol closes at 6 pm on Fridays. If you are planning to see the exhibit but can’t make the reception, the Capitol’s usual hours are 7 am to 8 pm, Mondays through Thursday; and 7 am to 6 pm on Fridays through Sunday.
Many thanks to the Utah Department of Culture and Community Engagement, Max Chang, and the Capitol Preservation Board for hosting us.
