Thanks to Ken Tokuno, we are able to share four more Tanforan poems by Kane Maida, Ken’s grandmother, who was a Richmond, CA mother of three when incarcerated in Tanforan in 1942. The poems were written in Japanese in the traditional tanka form. They were translated by Robert Huey, PhD, Professor Emeritus, East Asian Languages and Literatures, University of Hawai`i at Manoa.
In this quartet, Kane captures the empty days filled with the apprehension of an unknowable future. Read “My Body is Not My Body: Four Tanforan Poems.”
