Nov. 29, 2025: Memories of My Homeland: Seven Topaz Poems

At 44 years of age, Richmond nurserywoman Kane Maida faced her first winter in Topaz. Written in Japanese, her tanka, or classical form of short Japanese poetry, capture her efforts to find beauty in her new surroundings: Topaz concentration camp in Utah.

As the first winter of her incarceration progresses, she finds solace in thoughts of her homeland.

Many thanks to Kane’s grandson, Ken Tokuno, for sharing her poetry with us.
