Nov. 8, 2025: Volunteer

With Veterans’ Day approaching, we bring you Part 1 of Jon Yatabe’s story of his father, Tak Yatabe, who was a 35-year-old husband and father when he volunteered for the Army from Topaz in 1943. He was about 15 years older than the typical Nisei enlistee, and joining the Army meant leaving his parents, brothers, wife Kuni, and son Jon behind.

A senior Japanese American couple, dressed in dark formal wear, sit on a crude bench next to a little boy, their grandson, and his mother. Behind them stand a young Japanese American man in casual jacket and a slightly older brother in U.S. Army uniform. Behind the group is a row of barracks.

Jon has excerpted and adapted his father’s own account of the events in Topaz leading up to his decision. Read their story, “Volunteer.”
