April 4, 2026: Echoes in the Present

(Page 2)

1) Three Japanese American women post in front of a beautiful cove with a rocky point behind them in the distance. 2) Two senior Japanese American women smile in front of a wisteria Vine. 3) A senior Japanese American woman stands in front of a run-down shack with historical signage in front.
We took time to enjoy Monterey: (L) Mari Nakamura, Kyoko and Ruth at Pt. Lobos. Courtesy of Kimi Hill; (Middle) Ruth and Kyoko took a walking tour of downtown Monterey and (R) Cannery Row, where we saw the accommodations for immigrant cannery workers (1920-1950), including Japanese and Filipino workers. Courtesy of Ruth Sasaki.
Two photos of Chinese American women in a park. Both are carrying signs ("No one is above the law," and "No Kings"). There are other people behind them, also carrying signs.
After the program, friends Sue and Barbara and I caught the tail end of Monterey’s “No Kings” gathering minutes away from the JACL Hall. Courtesy of Ruth Sasaki.

Many thanks to Pam Dally-La Mica, Arly La Mica, and Larry Oda of the JACL for hosting the event, and to Kyoko,  Norm, Naomi and Kimi for sharing stories. Love and best wishes to May Takashima, who could not attend–we missed you, May!
